Open Hearth Cooking Workshop: Preparing Autumn Apples

 Overview: Visit historic Bonaire farm to learn how our forebearers prepared the bounty of autumn’s apples in this open-hearth cooking experiential workshop.

Program Description: Explore a myriad of delectable dishes featuring the star of Autumn’s Harvest, as we prepare receipts  familiar to most Colonial Kitchens.  Rachel Deddens, Culinary Food Historian and Hearth Cooking Traditionalist, will guide us through hands on preparations of apple breads, pies, puddings, and beverages, as well as, demonstrate how to preserve and dry apples that will remain delicious and nutritious for years to come.  All will be cooked in Bon Aire’s original 18th century hearth kitchen, over an open fire. Besides learning how to prepare food at the hearth, you will also depart with take home goodies to share with friends and loved ones. Healthful herbal teas and locally sourced lunch included.  Pre-registration required.

ABOUT RACHEL CAMPBELL DEDDENS

A native of Amherst County, Rachel has developed a passion for hearth cooking over the past twenty plus years.She directs demonstrations, classes and programs, and offers consultation in food history and culinary arts of the past. Her formal education includes a BA degree from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College with a major in history and primary concentration on women’s history and religion.
